What is an FHA loan?

FHA loans are mortgage loans insured by HUD. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) insures the mortgage loan against future default by the borrower. HUD doesn't extend FHA loans, they only insure the loan. FHA eligibility and FHA loan requirements are standard and set by HUD but the overlays vary from one lender to another.
