Without Congressional action, 73,000 Connecticut college students will see the interest rate on their subsidized Stafford student loans double on July 1. As he did one year ago when the interest rates were first in danger of doubling, Congressman Joe Courtney is advocating for students and their families in the House of Representatives to lock the current interest rates at 3.4 percent by introducing the Student Loan Relief Act of 2013 (H.R. 1595).

Courtney applauds the bipartisan compromise preventing student loan rate hike

On Friday, June 29, 2012, Congressman Courtney spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives after the House passed legislation to prevent the interest rate on subsidized Stafford student loans from doubling on July 1. Courtney introduced legislation on January 25 to permanently lock in the low rate, and worked with a number of groups - including PIRG, USSA, Campus Progress, Young Invincibles, Credo Action, and Rebuild the Dream - for months to prevent the rate from doubling.

Courtney introduces legislation to prevent rate increases on subsidized Stafford student loans

On February 24, 2012, Congressman Courtney held a meeting at the UConn School of Business to discuss legislation he introduced to stop student loan rates from increasing.

Without Congressional action, current rates will double later this year -- costing students and families thousands of dollars overtime. Courtney's bill would eliminate the existing sunset, and ensure that rates remain at 3.4 percent.
